Dictation app for Mac with on-device recognition on supported Macs

What Hovor does on Mac

Press a global keyboard shortcut to start and stop dictation, and Hovor pastes the text into the app you are using. The shortcut needs Accessibility permission. Add a custom dictionary and snippets, pick a tone style, and translate while you dictate through Hovor Cloud or your own OpenAI key (requires BYOK Unlock, the Bundle or Pro). With Local Unlock or Pro you can also record meetings and get a speaker-labelled transcript on your Mac.

On-device or cloud

On supported Macs, Hovor can dictate with on-device Parakeet or Whisper models, which you download in the app. The alternative is cloud dictation through Hovor Cloud; tone formatting runs in the cloud or with your own provider key. Hovor is built for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 15 or later.

Plans and pricing

Hovor on Mac is free to start: the Free plan includes 2,000 words per week, shared between cloud and on-device dictation. Pro costs $7.00 per month or $65.00 per year, with no weekly word limit on cloud dictation, translation and sync, and it includes Local and BYOK access. For a one-time purchase, Local Unlock ($20.00) adds unlimited on-device dictation, replacements, snippets and workflows, and Meetings on your Mac. BYOK Unlock ($15.00) lets you use your own provider keys, and the Local + BYOK Bundle ($30.00) includes both. The one-time unlocks do not include cloud dictation.

Set up in four steps

1. Download Hovor for Apple Silicon and move it to Applications. 2. Sign in to your Hovor account. 3. Allow microphone access, and Accessibility permission for the global shortcut. 4. To dictate on-device, download a speech model in the app, then press the shortcut in any app and talk.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hovor work offline on Mac?

Partly. On supported Macs, dictation with a downloaded on-device model runs on your Mac, but Hovor requires you to sign in, and cloud features such as cloud dictation and tone styles need an internet connection.

Does Hovor run on Intel Macs?

Hovor is built for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later. A legacy Intel download remains available, but Intel builds are no longer updated.

Is dictation on Mac free?

Yes, up to 2,000 words per week on the Free plan, shared between cloud and on-device dictation. Past the weekly limit, dictation pauses until the weekly reset or you upgrade.
